Class 1S to 6th Form at Bemrose School Derby and beyond, by Richard (Frank) Cousins

I was lucky enough to be in Roger's class all the way through Bemrose Boys Grammar School Derby from 1967 to 1974. He was always well-behaved but a rather zany sense of humour as I recall. I remember Roger was good at Art, he once produced a wonderful pen and ink picture of Breadsall village school. We were both members of the School choir in the 6th form. I remember one Christmas Carol concert at Southwell Minster, we had a short piece to sing at the start and a rather longer piece at the end. Having done the first bit, Roger and I , with a few others left to visit the Saracens Head nearby to 'quench our thirst' and after 4 pints only just made it back for the (wobbly) last bit. Oddly, this was out of character at the time for both of us! We shared a mutual love of music, Roger introduced me to the 'Eagles' in 1973, we were possibly their first fans in Bemrose as no-one else knew them. Another musical accomplishment was the School's House Music Competition which Roger, I and a few others entered. We won the Group competition with a rendition of the 'Urban Spaceman'by the Bonzo Dog Do Dar Band. Our reward was to appear in a night performance by the winners for friends and family. Our group wore fancy dress, Roger playing a Mandolin wearing a 'Deerstalker Hat', I had my long hair in a ponytail, purple vest, blue jeans and yellow boots, playing guitar. We all sang. Just after leaving School a few of us went youth hostelling in N Wales. We even took instruments along and did a 'gig'there I recall on the last day we had to leave the hostel mid morning but the bus back was not due for some time so we took our bags and musical instruments into the village pub. One local asked us to play, the landlord agreed and we did another impromptu gig. the locals were great with us and we shared a few drinks with them. It didn't stop there though. On the journey back some other passengers asked for a song or two and we duly obliged. After this we entered the field of work but still met up occasionally before I moved away from the area. My lasting memory of Roger as a teenager and young man is his kindness, generosity and thoughtfulness. At the funeral of our friend Chris a few years ago, Roger brought some photo negatives he'd taken of my wedding to Carole in 1977. Roger was very good at photography. We chose a wonderful shot of us 'just married' and had a large photo developed and framed. This Photo has been on display in our dining room ever since. I often talk about who took the photo and this will always remind us of Roger. Kind Regards to Family and friends.
